Explore the Enchanting Glow Worms of Wollemi National Park
Situated in the picturesque Wollemi National Park, conveniently close to the town of Lithgow, this remarkable tunnel was originally constructed as part of the railway line that facilitated operations for the Newnes Kerosene Shale Works.
This important rail line was ultimately dismantled around the 1940s, leading to the formation of the tunnel in the state we know it today. The Glow Worm Tunnel is one of only two disused tunnels that were part of this railway system.
Notably, this tunnel features a nearly 180-degree curvature, which results in it being exceptionally dark.
During typical weather conditions, a small creek flows gently through the tunnel, enhancing the overall ambiance.
These specific environmental conditions create an ideal habitat for certain species of glow worms that inhabit the walls and ceiling of the tunnel.
While glow worms can be discovered in other damp and shadowy locations throughout the Blue Mountains, the Glow Worm Tunnel offers visitors the very best opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures up close.
It is important to note, however, that these enchanting glow worms are particularly sensitive to disturbances in their natural habitat, especially when it comes to noise, light, physical contact, and smoke fumes.
